Abstract: Technologies that allow the capacity of fiber-optic communication lines (FOCLs) to be increased are considered. The continuing need for these technologies is stipulated by the growth in the volumes of newly created information, the virtualization of network applications, the development of cloud services, and the consolidation and establishment of new data centers. Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology and the introduction of coherent detection with digital signal processing have made it possible to increase dramatically the FOCL capacity. The main directions of FOCL development are the improvement of active equipment and optical fiber lines. The paper examines the trends in the development of active equipment for FOCLs.
Keywords: DWDM FOCL, OSNR required, BER, ASE noise, nonlinear noise, Gaussian noise, nQAM, chromatic dispersion compensation.
